• Breeding result 2014

As discussed earlier that i started this hobby back in 2011. From that time i am trying to learn new things. I learnt alot from this forum and still learning. Last year(2013) was not good in breeding perspective. But this year i have improved alot. Here are the breeding statistics of this year. Some original pictures are also attached.

Indian Ringnecks:

1) Yellow Ringneck Pair 1:
Male: Homegrown 3 years old.
Female: Home grown 2 years old.
Result: Laid 4 eggs, hatched 3 and all 3 survived.

2) Yellow Ringneck Pair 2:
Male: purchased as adult 5 years old bird.
Female: Homegrown three years old.
Result: Laid 5 eggs, 4 hatched and three survived.

3) Yellow Ringneck Pair 3:
Male: Three years old homegrown.
Female: Three years old homegrown.
Result: Female killed the male at the start of breeding season.

4) Blue Ringneck Pair:
Male: Blue Ringneck purchased as adult bird.
Female: 2 years old homegrown.
Result: Laid 3 eggs, hatched 2 and 1 survived.

5) Blue and lacewing pair:
Male: Blue ringneck home grown 3 years old.
Female: Blue lacewing homegrown and 3 years old.
Result: Laid 8 eggs in two clutches and 7 chicks hatched and survived.

6) Blue lacewing Pair:
Male: Three years old.
Female: Three years old.
Result: Pair laid 4 fertile eggs. I added the nesting material when pair was hatching the eggs. They destroyed all four eggs.

Cockteils:

1) Male whiteface cinnamon pearl pide and female cinnamon pearl:
Pair laid 14 eggs in three clutched and all hatched. 11 chicks survived.

2) Male whiteface and female eno:
Pair laid 12 eggs in two clutches. Only three were fertile and none of them hatched.

3) Male clear pide and female whiteface cinnamon pearl:
The pair is mating from last three months but didn’t give a single egg.

4) Male eno and female whiteface cinnamon pearl:
Pair didn’t give a single egg.

5) Male cinnamon and female whiteface cinnamon pearl:
Pair laid 12 eggs, all fertile, 8 hatched and 6 survived.

Fishers:
Total four pairs. Only three pairs laid 20 eggs and successfully raised 12 chicks.

The result is satisfactory to motivate me further in this hobby.original pics are attached.

Regards
Asad

This is not a satisfactory result, it is an excellent result specially keeping your start of breeding birds just 2-3 years back.

Asad Khan bhai congratulations You have all reasons to call it a good season. But let's also discuss where did you go wrong ? what are the lessons learnt ? Please share your thoughts I am specifically concerned about the ringnecks ... they are specialist parents so a few chicks dying in a clutch is a concern ! We can spare the first time breeders but what abt others ...

Thanx sherjil bhai. Following are the lessons learnt.
1) Cockteils and lovebirds give the best result when natural pairing selection is used. I kept all of them in single cage and separated the pairs which shown the bonding behaviour.
2) Cocketils should be avoided to breed in harsh months like december and January. Although they bred well in these months but chicks survival rate was low.
3) Slight disturbance in box i.e. addition of nesting material when pair is hatching doesn't disturb the cockteils. Whereas in ringnecks it proved to be fatal. The pair not broke all the eggs but also didn't give the second clutch.
4) solid partitions should be used between the ringneck cages as they become very aggressive in breeding season and badly disturbs the neighbours.
5) My set-up don't have direct sunlight so using the vitamin d3(Indrop-D & D-sun ) improved the results significantly.
6) There could be two reasons for chicks mortality in ringnecks
a) I was bit lenient in using soft food in first week after hatching due to my job routine. All of the chicks died within first three days of hatching.
b) Huge fluctuation of temperature in Islamabad. My setup is outdoor and i dont have any temperature controlling mechanism.
